Scientist predict that by 2050 the population of the Earth would be about 9,1 billion of which 80% will live in the urban areas. In a result, areas for cultivation of edible plants will be drastically decreased while the needs will be increased by 70%. To prevent the disaster we have to work on a compact, yet efficient solution.

The solution are vertical farms (also known as vertical cultivation) where LED are the main source of light. Imagine a hall with an area of 10 000 square meters with 30 floors of the same size than can provide food for 50 000 people. Plants could be grown without herbicides, pesticides, chemical fertilizers, protected from drought or flood throughout the whole year. Peak of the enviromentalists’ dreams. In addition, growing plants in the vertical farms would reduce food prices by eliminating the costs associated with its transport or processing.

The largest vertical farm – AeroFarms is located in New Jersey, US. AeroFarms is on a mission to transform agriculture by building and operating environmentally responsible farms throughout the world to enable local production at scale and nourish communities with safe, nutritious, and delicious food.

One of the largest farms in New Jersey, occupies area of 70,000 sq. ft., however, usable area on which the plants can be grown is multiplied because of the vertical structure of the farm. Impressive, right?

Vertical cultivation is the future of agriculture, and Grow-Spec, aware of the demands of the LED lighting technology, will take part in development of this cultivation technique.

Who knows, maybe our small and local changes in this area will bring the necessary changes in the global area associated with hunger.
